Stephen L. Foster, 79, of Fairhaven, passed away, Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford, after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Lee) Foster.
Born, in New Bedford, the son of the late Albert E. and the late Margaret M. (Cronin) Foster, he was a lifelong resident of the town and was a graduate of Fairhaven High School Class, of 1950, and a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church.
Mr. Foster served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and later worked in customer service at Revere Copper and Brass, for 32 years, until his retirement, in 1987. After retirement he worked as a custodian at the Millicent Library for 12 years.
Mr. Foster had attended Boston University, was a member of the American Legion Post #166, of Fairhaven, had been a Town Meeting Member, in Fairhaven, and a volunteer at the Fort Taber Military Museum. He was an avid reader and history buff.
He is survived by four sons: Stephen L. Foster, Jr. and his wife, Mary Jane, Paul M. Foster and his wife, Frances, Jonathan Foster, and Christopher Foster and his wife, Colleen, all of Fairhaven; two brothers: Edward Foster, of Portland, Oregon, and Albert Foster, of East Freetown; seven grandchildren, Jessica and Nichole Mercer, both of New Bedford, and Stephen J., Nathan, Matthew, Brendan, and Katherine Foster, all of Fairhaven; a special friend Dorothy Martin, of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Foster was the father of the late Patricia Mercer and brother of the late Robert and Alfred Foster.
His calling hours are, Friday, from 4-8 PM, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven. The funeral will be, Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 8:00AM, from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 9:00AM, in St. Joseph’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment will be in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven.
